Movement Facilitator

Kirstie is a movement facilitator – trained in Pilates, yoga and fitness, and with a background in dance. She brings these different elements together in all her classes. Having grown up with some fairly strict dance training, she loves to throw that out the window and all dancing these days is strictly for fun. “I try not to take it too seriously. Just leave your ego at the door and let yourself truly shine!”

“I’m continuously learning, thinking and rethinking – how the body works, how we move and how we can move better. I find the science of breathing, of movement and bio-mechanics and neuroscience fascinating – but equally I love putting on music and just jumping around – that feeling of anything goes. Breathe fully, move often and move well, break a sweat and have fun with it. Building confidence, self acceptance and self love is at the heart of my classes.”

Dreaming of a Studio

How it All Began

Kirstie had always dreamt of her own studio – in fact she remembers quite clearly dancing around her dad’s garage in the 1980s and planning how she would one day convert it into a dance studio! The garage is actually a still a garage in Edinburgh but Kirstie has created her own space for movement in the Hebrides – Sandwickhill Studios. It took 3 years to get through planning and to build Sandwickhill Studios – not least because of COVID striking in 2020. The new studio space opened in Autumn 2020.

Having struggled to find spaces to operate from as a freelance teacher in and around Stornoway, Kirstie had a really clear idea of what she wanted – somewhere that doesn’t take itself too seriously but is beautiful, natural, and nurturing – a place to inspire movement, nurture friendships and community, and offer a home from home.

Our Team

Hi I'm Holly! I’m a mum to two very cool young humans (and several animals) and a mindfulness, meditation and yoga teacher. I’m a total geek for the nervous system and our amazing bodies and passionate about better well-being - all of my yoga classes incorporate mindfulness as well as movement. I really hope to share some of the joy - and the fun - that I get from my own yoga practice and from moving my body. My own well-being practices of course include yoga and mindfulness but outside of that I love to exercise in all sorts of ways. I love walking my dogs, hikes, outdoor swimming, kayaking, the occasional run, lifting weights, climbing, dancing around my kitchen too and I’ve got a new found love of Zumba!

I’m Emma, and I love teaching yoga. The slow, gentle kind, as well as the firey, dynamic kind! I teach Hatha Yoga, a gentle, flowing style incorporating nourishing, strengthening postures, dynamic sequences and mindful pranayama techniques. I am passionate that yoga is for everyone, no matter what their ability, body shape or experience, and love to offer options and variations throughout my classes, to give my clients the confidence to find their own way in their yoga journey. As well as yoga I also love Ronnie (Mr 67yoga!) our outdoor, lifestyle and bike shop Store 67 in Stornoway, our son, Bertie the cockapoo and Loula the bunny. A few more of my favourite things are: Beaches (hot or cold!), cocktails and pasta, staying up late, and getting up early, the city and the dramatic Outer Hebrides where we live.

I'm Christine and I believe that yoga is for everybody and EVERY BODY. I invite you to come as you are, have fun and, together, we will journey towards finding a practice that feels great for you. Yoga not only called to me as a physical practice but as a way to release, relax and connect with my inner self. In each class I include the physical asana practice as well as a long Savasana, or relaxation period, to allow people to experience deep rest and nourishment. My holistic approach includes guided meditation, body scans, affirmations and poetry as well as optional essential oils lovingly chosen to compliment each class theme. For anyone who wants to try yoga but feels anxious that they need to be at a certain place physically... park that for now. Come along and try it for yourself. Speak to your yoga teacher about any your concerns and they will absolutely support you in this. Let go of any pressure, expectations and trust yourself.

Dancer and therapist Louise Davidson is an ex US ballroom and Latin champion, originally training in the US and going on to manage one of New York's top dance studios. She has over 25 years experience as a dance, movement and therapy specialist. Always a dancer at heart Louise still teaches and performs but a love of movement has led her to expand her learning and teaching to include rehabilitation and functional movement training. She has also trained as a Gyrotonic practitioner and a Cranial Sacral, Myofascial and Neuromuscular therapist as well as developing her own movement programme, The Release Method. Louise started "The Stress Monkey Club CIC", a community interest group in Stornoway addressing physical and mental wellbeing through movement, rehabilitation and dance.

My own well-being practices of course include yoga and mindfulness but outside of that I love to exercise in all sorts of ways. "Hey! I'm Eilidh. I'm a yoga teacher with a 9-5 office based job who loves dog walks, crafting and all things sci-fi. I'm not a naturally flexible person and I've been practising yoga for over 10years. I can honestly say you don't need to be able to touch your toes to have a yoga practice! I initially started to stretch out my tired, achy muscles after running and thought maybe I'd get a little more flexible. I found even forward folds challenging at the start and initially stuck with yoga out of stubbornness! Nowadays my practice looks different and has grown over time. One day it can be a long, flowing sequence and others, lying on my mat and trying to give myself some space. I've come to realise it doesn't necessarily matter why you start yoga in the first place, it's about what you learn if you keep with it. Yoga isn't about being bendy and the great thing is, it can meet you where you are. My classes probably won't involve a lot of Sanskrit so can be perfect if you feel like a yoga newbie who doesn't know uttanasana from utkatasana. We will breathe, move and then chill at the end. I love movement and don't be surprised if there are some sneaky drills that maybe don't look like yoga peppered into my classes."

Hello! I'm Eleanor, I'm 24 and I'm from the Isle of Lewis. I'm a Physiotherapist, PT, footballer and fitness instructor. I've always loved all forms of sport and exercise and . I'm so passionate about encouraging EVERYONE to move in any way they can. I want to help make movement a priority and try to remove possible barriers because motion is the best lotion or potion! I love football and first started playing football in Back FC. I continued playing into high school and the team had a very successful few years! More recently I played for and was club captain of the Glasgow University 1s. Now, I currently play for Partick Thistle Womens Football in the Scottish Women's Premier League 1. I love the competitivness and the team spirit of football, at any level. I've met my best friends through the sport and it's provided me with amazing opportunities! As well as being a qualified PT, footballer and fitness instructor I've just completed my Masters in Physiotherapy.

I’m Catriona and I am originally from Ayrshire in the South West of Scotland. My interest in dance, theatre, and the performing arts began from a young age when I was attending youth theatre and dance classes, and watching live performances. What started in my younger years as a hobby developed into a passion as I made my way through secondary school, and by the time I had studied Performing Arts at college, I knew that it was something I wanted to make a career out of. I trained for two years at Ayrshire College before completing a BA (Hons) Performance at the University of the West of Scotland. I'm a dancer, choreographyer and theatre maker and when I'm not delivering classes at Sandwickhill Studios, I'm working as an art worker at an Lanntair delivering their Full Circle programme.

I am Emma Macleod, I am 23 years old and I am from the Isle of Lewis! I have always loved dance and actually already coach my own cheerleading team with Sandwickhill academy as well as working full time in a Primary School! Zumba peaked my interest after going with my auntie one night. I loved the different styles of dancing and how it made me feel afterwards. Hi! I’m Kayleigh! I started dancing & cheering at the age of 3 & competing in national and international divisions right up until I was 26! I began my coaching career as a young teen and knew right away that this was what I wanted to do. I’ve taught kids & adults over the years and can’t wait for my adult class to start again! From dance fitness to dance technique & everything in between! I specialise in choreography & love creating unique routines of all styles but my heart lies with Hip Hop. It’s a style I’ve loved from the very start. In 2019 I was chosen to represent Scotland at the world dance championships in Florida - what an experience! I’ve had a couple years of because I became a mummy! (He’s a little hip hop star in the making) I’m passionate about making sure you leave my classes with that “feel good factor” - can’t wait to meet you all!

We had a clothes swap in the studio last night. Everyone brings unwanted clothes, you take whatever you like, donate £1 per item for charity and everything left over gets donated to a charity shop.
So much fun, so much better for your pocket and the environment than buying new clothes, and it helps raise money for a good cause. Shopping has never felt so wholesome!
I also love the vibe of women lifting each other up - I heard it all night as we all tried on the clothes (there’s plenty mirrors). People passing things around saying “this would look fab on you”, “this is your colour”, “you look amazing”. If only we could all talk to ourselves like this all the time.
Personally I’ve walked away with a whole new wardrobe and lots of funny memories.
Thanks everyone who came and I definitely recommend that anyone who hasn’t done one of these gets together with their friends and holds a clothes swap soon!!!

I held an inversions workshop today and it was loads of fun but I didn’t take any pictures so here’s me prepping during the week.
I wish I had taken pics though as what an amazing group who all got fully involved ans smashed it.
I know yoga isn’t necessarily about smashing it , but what I mean is that they fully showed up, were true to themselves and their bodies, came with open hearts and minds, humour, humility and willingness to learn. We let go of attachment to any particular outcome and set personal intentions and it was just fun. We acknowledged fears and barriers, physically and emotionally.
 So yeah they smashed it and it was a great start to a sat! Were you there? How was it for you?

We are running an in studio Beginner's Pilates course starting Monday 29th August. We will have online catch up available but we think participants will really benefit from being in the studio with a teacher. 
There are so many benefit to Pilates - you'll feel stronger, taller, more flexible and just better in your body. I honestly believe everyone can benefit from some Pilates in their life. 
This is suitable for complete beginners but also for those who've maybe tried it before, not been for a while, have done a little online, or just want to get right back to basics.

This Saturday I’m running a 2 hour workshop all about getting upside down. It doesn’t have to be a handstand or a headstand - it’s more a chance to explore and building confidence turning your practice upside down.
We’ll go through some of the foundations, have a wee play, and try some stuff out with guidance and support
This is the ideal place to playfully explore adding inversions to your yoga practice.
It’s a workshop style class so we won’t be moving continuously.
